Medication Lock box available at Library

The library has partnered with Adams County Public Health to provide medication lock boxes at our library.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major effect on our lives. Many of us have faced or are currently facing challenges that can be stressful and overwhelming. As a result, suicidal thoughts and attempts may occur when individuals experience difficulty coping with the stressors of life.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in young people ages 10-24. It is also known that individuals in this age group are more impulsive, and may attempt suicide with little planning during a short-term crisis. Medications and firearms are often accessible in homes and may be used in an effort to end a life. One method of suicide prevention is the reduction of access to lethal means. By disposing of unused medications and keeping current medications and firearms in a locked, safe place, it becomes harder to access when one desires to end his or her life. When medication and firearms are not readily available for a suicide attempt, more time is available to decrease a knee-jerk response to a crisis situation. It allows more time for adult and/or peer intervention. It may just save a precious life.
